  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk (or milk with 1/2 teaspoon vinegar)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8-inch round or square cake pan.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg; set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream softened butter and brown sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time and mix well. Stir in vanilla.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to the creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk; mix just until combined.
  5. Gently fold in chopped dates and walnuts until evenly distributed.
  6. Pour batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for 35–40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
